Ang Lee is a Taiwanese filmmaker. His films are known for their emotional charge and exploration of repressed and hidden emotions. During his career, Lee has received international critical and popular acclaim and numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards, four BAFTA Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards. He is also the only filmmaker to win the Golden Bear twice and one of only four filmmakers to win the Golden Lion twice, and received the BAFTA Fellowship in 2020. Born in Pingtung County and raised in Hualien City, Taiwan, Lee graduated from what is now the National Taiwan University of Arts in 1975. After moving to the United States in 1979, he attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and New York University.
