The Raid 2

I grew up watching John Woo films like The Killer and A Better Tomorrow, and those films had a big influence on me in terms of how you blend drama, emotion, and character within the action.

In terms of the storytelling and the character arcs, there's a lot of influence that came from the likes of Park Chan-wook and Kim Jee-woon. So films like Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance and I Saw The Devil have a great sense of tragedy and inevitability, and that kind of downward spiral that the characters are on. That sense of brutality was something we wanted to explore in The Raid films.

For The Raid 2, I think the influences are probably a little bit wider... I looked at a lot of Korean cinema, obviously. I also looked at a lot of Hong Kong cinema... and in terms of action, I was obviously watching a lot of Mad Max 2 and The French Connection...
