I watched a lot of Chabrol. I specifically re-watched a bunch of his domestic thrillers, like 'La Femme infidèle' and 'Les Biches.' His approach to genre, where it’s more about the characters and their messy emotional lives than it is about the plot mechanics, was a huge inspiration.

The wonderful Chabrol made a film called LA FEMME INFIDELE which this film UNFAITHFUL is based on. I saw it twenty-odd years ago, maybe even longer, and loved it. When it came to me again as a script, I reread the script and thought about the original and thought 'This is a way I can do an erotic film that is slightly different than other films that I’ve done.'
