What changed everything for me, and what got me thinking about making this movie now, was The 36th Chamber of Shaolin and Five Fingers of Death.

I wanted to make a movie that would be like a greatest hits of everything I love in martial arts and Japanese cinema. So, I took Lady Snowblood, I took The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, I took The Street Fighter with Sonny Chiba. I showed all these movies to my cast and crew. I said, 'These are the movies that we're making.'

One of the things I definitely wanted to do with Kill Bill was, not only do a Shaw Brothers movie, but also do a King Hu movie. And 'Come Drink With Me' (1966) and 'A Touch of Zen' (1971) were definitely on the brain.
