I grew up with those movies, I grew up with Sam Raimi, with Dario Argento, with Romero. I mean, Dawn of the Dead is just the perfect film in my eyes.

He just had this incredible talent for satire, for taking the temperature of society, and for taking genre and twisting it, and adding something to it. And I think that’s something that certainly always appealed to me. Every zombie film after Dawn of the Dead has been compared to it. It’s unavoidable because it’s a brilliant blueprint. In a sense, Shaun of the Dead is also doing that.

For the second part of the movie in the shopping mall, I told my cinematographer that I wanted it to be like a mix between George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead and Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s The Last Days.
