Uncut Gems
Films that shaped it

We talk about Werner Herzog all the time. He’s the godfather of our particular strain of filmmaking... We just rewatched Woyzeck the other night. That movie is incredible.

We looked at 'Close-Up' as a masterclass in how you can take a real-life situation and elevate it, distort it, and make it purely cinematic, but still feel intensely real. We were obsessively watching 'Close-Up' and other Kiarostami films before and during the making of 'Uncut Gems'.

Code Unknown really had an impact on me. The structural elements of that film, how you come back to characters, the idea of having different chapters of people’s lives and being dropped into their day, that film did it in such an amazing way. And it’s a Haneke film, so there's obviously a lot of tension and a great deal of discomfort... We try to achieve a little bit of that.
