The Square
Films that shaped it

This film [The Exterminating Angel] is an amazing examination of our social contracts, class, and group behavior. It’s one of the best examples of how surrealism can explain reality and how our social behaviors are absurd when analyzed from the outside.

With 'The Square' I tried to make a more Buñuelian film, similar to 'The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie', where you have different scenes connected more by theme than by narrative logic, taking place in slightly different places, but still within the same world.

I like Fassbinder, and a lot of the German films from the 70s. Films like Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, and Effi Briest.

I watched Haneke’s Caché when I was younger, and I was so provoked by the experience that I tried to intellectualize it, to figure out what was going on. It became an important film for me to look at the relationship between audience and screen, and how to involve the audience in the story.
