I’ve learned a lot from the way he directed actresses, and how he captured loneliness. Films like The Merchant of Four Seasons and Fear Eats the Soul are pure genius in showing desperation.

This movie made me want to be an actress. Or maybe it made me want to make movies. It made me understand movies as something that could be simultaneously joyful and heartbroken, and that those things didn’t have to cancel each other out.

Fassbinder’s The Merchant of Four Seasons... that film, I think, is just such a devastating use of melodrama and theatricality to talk about power and class and the failures of the individual within a system. It’s absolutely something I’ve taken into my own work.
