one example Harold and Maude... I also see that it's in the florida project

His work means a lot to me and, for those who have seen The Runner, you can probably see its influence on The Florida Project.

I’m very inspired by Abbas Kiarostami. I grew up with his films. Taste of Cherry is one that really got to me, how he manages to create empathy and understanding for a character through this very simple, almost detached observation. That was certainly in my mind for The Florida Project.

I was very influenced by earlier Ken Loach especially Cass and riffraff... we applied this to to to Florida using the humor

As a director, he [Werner Herzog] is someone who has truly inspired me. He’s always taking risks, pushing boundaries, and has this wonderful way of capturing moments in such a unique way. Stroszek has certainly informed my way of making films, and how I often work with non-actors and integrate improvisational elements into my shoots.

Totally. That’s something I was looking for. There are two films that really were big influences that I’m sure you could tell. One is Ratcatcher, and the other is Dennis Hopper’s Out of the Blue. That one in particular, I think, for the energy of Linda Manz. That was an influence on Brooklynn [Prince, who plays Moonee]. Just that rebellious, anti-authority, punk energy. The two films, Ratcatcher and Out of the Blue, really gave me the confidence to shoot a film where children are at the center of a very dark narrative.
