They are magnificent… In them, I have learned to recognise that love is the best, most manipulative, and most effective instrument of social repression… My films Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, Martha, and The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant are melodramas, and in them I tried to incorporate what I learned from Sirk.

I was influenced by Fassbinder, of course. For my first feature film, *Sitcom*, I tried to copy *The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant*, but in my own way, with my own story. It's not a melodrama like Fassbinder, but it's a family drama, in a single room, with dialogue.

Tabu by Murnau, they're always in my memory. They're part of my education, and I love them very much.
