Stroszek
Films it shaped

I grew up with films like Stroszek, Fat City, Nashville. These films really influenced me early on because it’s almost a subgenre of film where the outcasts are the ones who are in the spotlight. I always gravitated towards that.

The way he [Robert Pattinson] would carry himself, he would move in a different way, and that’s what I love about Herzog, you know? The man, Bruno S. in Stroszek... he’s always like a street urchin, you know? He’s this incredibly innocent guy but he’s street-smart, and that character of Bruno in Stroszek, Herzog saw that in him and brought it out.

As a director, he [Werner Herzog] is someone who has truly inspired me. He’s always taking risks, pushing boundaries, and has this wonderful way of capturing moments in such a unique way. Stroszek has certainly informed my way of making films, and how I often work with non-actors and integrate improvisational elements into my shoots.

I was looking at a lot of Herzog, particularly Stroszek and Aguirre, for the way he captures this raw, desperate human condition. The feeling of being trapped, both physically and psychologically, in 'Stroszek' was a huge touchstone for The Lighthouse.
