Spring Breakers
Where the DNA of Spring Breakers travels
Films that shaped it
-
He raves about Michael Mann's Miami Vice, watching it over and over. A new vision taking shape.
-
I watched Pasolini’s 'Accattone' again and thought, ‘Wow, this is a movie that I don’t think people could make today.’ It’s so raw and so real, and it’s just not precious. It's like a document in a way. I think it influenced me in certain ways, to just try to go as far as you can with the form.
-
Films like 'if....', 'Midnight Cowboy', 'Faces in the Crowd' - things that felt dangerous, that you weren't supposed to be watching.
-
When I was first thinking of making the film, I remember thinking a lot about Antonioni's Zabriskie Point. I've always loved the look and feel of that film, the way the landscape and the characters coexist. We tried to incorporate some of that.
-
I was thinking a lot about Werner Herzog. Aguirre, the Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo and Stroszek and Kaspar Hauser. These films just exist in a different way.
-
I love Alan Clarke – 'Made in Britain' and 'Scum'. I love those movies. I just feel like he had a great sense of capturing behaviour, capturing reality and almost having a political edge without having a political agenda.

Filmed by k who had recently come off working with Gaspar Noe on Enter the Void, Spring Breakers has a distinctly impressionistic vibe.
