Sans soleil
Where the DNA of Sans soleil travels
Films it shaped

I think the work of Chris Marker in a way, in Sans soleil (1983), is a very interesting film, because it’s a film about memory and its impossibility. And a film about the fact that you remember things in a sort of broken line. I think that kind of work, for me, is extremely important.

Chris Marker is one of the all-time greats. Sans Soleil and La Jetée really pushed the boundaries of what film could be for me.

The other film that really influenced me was Sans Soleil (Chris Marker, 1982) because it’s such an unusual film and it made me realise that there are other ways of making films that aren’t narrative.

Marker is a very strong influence, particularly *Sans Soleil* and *La Jetée* [...] the way he uses narrative elements, especially in *Sans Soleil*, to connect images and create an emotional landscape...

I just love Chris Marker. I always have. I've always been influenced by him. I've been influenced by a lot of films, but Sans Soleil... This is more of an essay film, and it's a beautiful meditation on travel, time, and memory.

My true family is the history of cinema...I like the dream aspect of film; I like the collage aspect of film, like Marker.

SANS SOLEIL is one of those films that continues to move, challenge, and inspire me. Perhaps more than any other film, it taught me how to feel through the essay form, how to use ideas as a means to uncover something emotional. Chris Marker continues to be one of my biggest influences.

There are certain films that have definitely influenced the construction of the film. Films by Chris Marker, Sans soleil and La Jetée, for example.
