Midsommar
Where the DNA of Midsommar travels
Films that shaped it
-
We wanted the film to feel like that three-strip technicolor process. We were thinking about, especially 'Black Narcissus'.
-
Tarkovsky, especially Mirror and Stalker, for their dream-like quality and the way they blend memory, reality, and vision. That kind of non-linear, impressionistic storytelling is something I'm always drawn to.

I’ve seen it referred to as a folk horror film, which is fine, but I guess when I think of that sub-genre I’m going to films like The Wicker Man and Witchfinder General, which are not far off from this. I was also thinking about Ken Russell’s The Devils, which I watched again recently. It’s an insane film.

Kubrick, Haneke (Code Unknown was a big one for me), Lars von Trier, Robert Bresson, Roy Andersson, Gaspar Noe, Park Chan-wook, David Cronenberg, Woody Allen, Noah Baumbach, etc.

a big thing I learned on 'Hereditary' and 'Midsommar' was I didn't do any coverage there... on 'Beau' I was more aware.
