I think Ozu is probably the most essential director for me. When I first saw Ozu, it was in a series at the New Yorker Film Society when I was 19. It was Tokyo Story, Late Spring, An Autumn Afternoon... It became clear that Ozu was going to be an enormous influence.

I had seen The Graduate many times before, but on that rewatch, it really clicked for me how much it’s about the dissolution of a marriage. It’s also about the beginning of a marriage, but it’s about the whole cycle of this family breaking apart.
