Where the DNA of Mandy travels
Films it shaped

There’s also an element of the experimental films I saw at art school, like Eraserhead, or just weird cinema in general that really stuck with me. Like the way Eraserhead feels like it’s a dream that you can’t wake up from.

When I saw 'Eraserhead' for the first time, it was like a black-and-white fever dream that just crawled inside my brain. It showed me how potent atmosphere and sound design could be.
-
We loved that kind of brutal, grimy, almost punk aesthetic of those films, particularly the first Mad Max. It's just so raw and visceral, and that's something we always strived for in our action.
-
Fulci's films, especially The Beyond and Zombie Flesh Eaters, showed me that you don't need a huge budget to create truly terrifying and disturbing imagery. It's all about the atmosphere and how you make the audience feel it.

Kwaidan Atlas note
When I was developing the story of Over Your Dead Body I looked at a lot of old Japanese ghost story films. Films like Kwaidan, by Masaki Kobayashi, which is very famous for its beauty, and Ugetsu by Kenji Mizoguchi. These films were great inspiration.

Inferno Atlas note
I’m a big fan of Argento, and obviously his giallo stuff. And it’s not just the more popular ones like Suspiria and Deep Red. I love his other stuff, like Tenebrae, Inferno, Opera. I grew up on a lot of these movies, so I felt like I just wanted to do a movie that was a love letter to that style, to that specific genre.
