'Ken Loach’s Riff-Raff is great,' she says. 'The first scene of that film is like, the character gets on a bus and goes to London, and it’s basically just him for 15 minutes. It’s a very simple story, but I remember it really blew my mind.'

I watched a lot of French films, particularly by female directors, or films with strong female protagonists. So I watched Vagabond, I watched Rosetta, I watched A Woman Under the Influence, I watched Fat Girl, Sous le Sable, The Piano Teacher. I love those films. They all have such specific points of view, and they’re so uncompromising in their vision of women.

The other one, and this is completely different, but I really love the movie Ed Wood. And I feel like there’s a whole generation of filmmakers who were formed on this idea of, 'I'm going to make the movie I want to make' and 'Ed Wood' is such a beautiful example of that.
