Kwaidan
Films that shaped it

Mandy Atlas note
When I was developing the story of Over Your Dead Body I looked at a lot of old Japanese ghost story films. Films like Kwaidan, by Masaki Kobayashi, which is very famous for its beauty, and Ugetsu by Kenji Mizoguchi. These films were great inspiration.

There are certain movies that have a very specific visual language. The way that Masaki Kobayashi shot Kwaidan, it’s just astonishing. You can feel the intention of every single frame. I remember seeing that movie and being so blown away by its commitment to a style. I watched it multiple times while making ‘A Ghost Story’ and just thought, ‘Man, this is how you make a movie.’
