He tried to portray it in Hour of the Wolf (1968)... it found its final form in Cries and Whispers (1972).

It’s a ghost story but it’s more about the living than the dead. For me, the influences are The Innocents, The Haunting, The Uninvited, The Turn of the Screw, Hour of the Wolf, The Spirit of the Beehive.

Antichrist is an homage to Strindberg, but also to Ingmar Bergman and his film Hour of the Wolf, which is about a man who becomes insane.

Ari Aster has cited Ingmar Bergman repeatedly, specifically the way Bergman uses family as a crucible for psychological destruction. Persona, Hour of the Wolf, Cries and Whispers, Bergman's films are horror films that refuse to call themselves that. The grief at the center of Hereditary, the way trauma passes through families like a curse, this is Bergman's territory. Hour of the Wolf is Bergman's actual horror film and is streaming on the Criterion Channel.
