Hereditary
Where the DNA of Hereditary travels
Films that shaped it

I mean, a film like Edward Yang's *A Brighter Summer Day* is a huge touchstone for me. The idea of something that begins very gently and very naturally and very subtly, and then just very slowly creeps into something truly horrifying and tragic.

Ari Aster has cited Ingmar Bergman repeatedly, specifically the way Bergman uses family as a crucible for psychological destruction. Persona, Hour of the Wolf, Cries and Whispers, Bergman's films are horror films that refuse to call themselves that. The grief at the center of Hereditary, the way trauma passes through families like a curse, this is Bergman's territory. Hour of the Wolf is Bergman's actual horror film and is streaming on the Criterion Channel.

I love Bergman. He’s obviously a master. I think I’ve seen Cries and Whispers maybe 20 times. What I respond to in Bergman is his willingness to really go to the darkest places, and to commit to an interiority, and to a feeling of claustrophobia.

I watched a lot of films that I love that don't really resemble 'Hereditary' at all, but were just things I wanted to revisit that have a certain tone or atmosphere I was interested in... films like '3 Women'...

The films that have been on my mind [for Hereditary] are Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon, Dogville, and [Robert Bresson’s] Mouchette. Those films were very impactful to me because they are about communities, and the way those communities, through their belief systems, can cause a kind of evil.

a big thing I learned on 'Hereditary' and 'Midsommar' was I didn't do any coverage there... on 'Beau' I was more aware.
