Ghost in the Shell
Films that shaped it

I'm a big admirer of Tarkovsky's work, especially Stalker and Solaris. What I tried to put into Ghost in the Shell was that atmosphere, that profound sense of loneliness and contemplation you find in his films. Not so much the narrative, but the spiritual quality.

Before the Wachowskis wrote a single line of The Matrix, they flew to Hong Kong. John Woo's Hard Boiled, its lobby shootout, its operatic slow-motion, its bodies used as instruments of pure cinematic force, became the template. Yuen Woo-ping, who choreographed every action sequence in The Matrix, had been working in Hong Kong action cinema for two decades. The bullet time isn't science fiction. It's John Woo made digital.

The Matrix Reloaded Atlas note
The Wachowskis showed Ghost in the Shell to producer Joel Silver and said: we want to do that for real. Mamoru Oshii's anime became the template for the Matrix's visual philosophy, the merging of biological and digital, the question of consciousness in mechanical systems. They then hired legendary Hong Kong choreographer Yuen Woo-ping to ground it in physical reality. The result is world cinema DNA running through American blockbuster. Ghost in the Shell is on MUBI.
