For the idea of someone observing his own life from outside, I loved that short by Chris Marker, La Jetée.

The photography is fantastic. And also the way he combines the visions of the kid, the dreams, and reality. That’s very inspiring.

What I always love about Lynch’s Eraserhead and Lost Highway is that they’re like dreams. You perceive them as a very strong experience, but you don’t fully understand it because it has the logic of a dream. So, I tried to make films like that too.

Visually, I was trying to mix different styles, from the experimental cinema of Kenneth Anger and Jordan Belson to films like Suspiria for its extreme use of color.
-
When I was 15 years old I saw a movie by Ken Russell called Altered States, and I loved it very much. It was about consciousness, the self, and trying to go back to the origins of the human mind. The visuals were outstanding and crazy.

I like all Lynch movies, and I love the TV series, and I love Fire Walk With Me, because the more abstract, the more emotional and experimental the director is, the more I like it. Lynch is one of the only guys who makes movies like dreams and nightmares, so if I try to do something, I try to go in that direction.

Filmed by k who had recently come off working with Gaspar Noe on Enter the Void, Spring Breakers has a distinctly impressionistic vibe.
