Paul Schrader, director of 'The Canyons', stated: 'What if you went back to the late ’60s/early ’70s European sex film, like Bertolucci’s Last Tango In Paris... or those films where you have these upper-class people in a beautiful apartment, and they’re bored, and they have sex and drugs, and they play games?' in describing an aesthetic influence for 'The Canyons'.
