I saw Son of Saul when it came out and found it very upsetting. I admired its rigor, but for me, I wanted to find a different path.

I mean there's an obvious through line to like Deliverance, and Come and See [...] These are films that stuck with me for decades, and they obviously influence how I create tension.

When I was thinking about how to depict the horror that was in the story of Suspiria, I was thinking about films like Come and See, a masterpiece by Elem Klimov, but also [Francis Ford Coppola's] Apocalypse Now.

Thank you for bringing that film up [Elem Klimov's Come and See (1985)], because that is truly one of the films that I think inspired me to want to be a filmmaker. That film, if you have seen it, it brings you into the trauma, it gives you a first-hand experience of what trauma is all about... In the way that they shot the film, it’s not really a one-shot, but it has that feel of a continuous experience. It was definitely a big inspiration for me.
