Films that shaped it

SANS SOLEIL is one of those films that continues to move, challenge, and inspire me. Perhaps more than any other film, it taught me how to feel through the essay form, how to use ideas as a means to uncover something emotional. Chris Marker continues to be one of my biggest influences.

When I started to make ‘Columbus,’ I returned to my roots, and Edward Yang, particularly ‘A Brighter Summer Day,’ was a big influence on just observing characters.

Herzog is a good example. I’m thinking particularly of Encounters at the End of the World, that kind of observational approach to humanity and nature that’s very present.
