Caché
Films that shaped it

For me, Buñuel is one of the most important directors. Films like The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Exterminating Angel, Viridiana, Diary of a Chambermaid - they have shown me how to represent the absurdities and hypocrisies of bourgeois society.

I watched Haneke’s Caché when I was younger, and I was so provoked by the experience that I tried to intellectualize it, to figure out what was going on. It became an important film for me to look at the relationship between audience and screen, and how to involve the audience in the story.

Ari Aster has cited Ingmar Bergman repeatedly, specifically the way Bergman uses family as a crucible for psychological destruction. Persona, Hour of the Wolf, Cries and Whispers, Bergman's films are horror films that refuse to call themselves that. The grief at the center of Hereditary, the way trauma passes through families like a curse, this is Bergman's territory. Hour of the Wolf is Bergman's actual horror film and is streaming on the Criterion Channel.
