Boyhood
Films that shaped it

I remember when I saw Small Change how much I liked it, because it was really focusing on the world of children. I think that was always a big reference point for me.

The reason I loved Close-Up so much, when I first saw that in the early 90s, it was a complete blurring of what’s real and what’s not, and it was fascinating because you had no idea what was documentary, what was scripted. Kiarostami’s work overall, I’ve always admired for that. He was doing stuff that felt outside any category.

I’ve never been comfortable with the fiction/documentary divide. Films like Kiarostami’s Close Up (1990) or the films of Robert Bresson just really opened up a world of narrative possibility that you don’t find in the classic realist cinema.

When I started doing 'Boyhood,' I thought of the 'Up' series, not as a filmic influence, but as a conceptual influence. That was just something I had in the back of my mind. They shoot every seven years; I wanted to do it annually.
