Films that shaped it

The first time I saw Glauber Rocha’s films, I immediately felt a very strong connection to the radical nature of his cinema... He became a very strong presence, almost like a father figure. I really adore “Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol” (Black God, White Devil), “Terra em Transe” (Entranced Earth) and “O Dragão da Maldade Contra o Santo Guerreiro” (Antonio Das Mortes). These films, in their radical formal aspect and very political content, really marked my growth as a filmmaker.

Films like Macunaíma and Vidas Secas (Dry Lives) were huge for him. ‘They were talking about my country, my people,’ he says. ‘It was very powerful. And I still feel that. My films are not quite the same, but the spirit of social observation and trying to understand Brazil is there.’
