Certainly Planet of the Vampires (1965) by Mario Bava was a film I looked at. I felt the way he creates the atmosphere... was very effective. The design of the spaceship, the exploration of the abandoned ship, these elements were definitely in my mind.

My relationship with cinema started mainly with 2001 and Alien. These two movies, I saw them very young and they deeply influenced me, how I perceive cinema, how I perceive sci-fi, how I perceive sound design, production design.

Its most obvious influence is Howard Hawks' "The Thing" (1951), which was also about a team in an isolated outpost who discover a long-dormant alien, bring it inside, and are picked off one by one as it haunts the corridors. Look at that movie, and you see "Alien" in embryo.

My three great influences, creature-wise, are undoubtedly Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Alien, as in Ridley Scott’s Alien. And they’re influences in many, many ways. Both from a design point of view, and a narrative point of view.

Badlands is even technically a crossover with the Alien franchise since it features androids from the Whale and Utani Corporation that originated in those movies.
