A Man Escaped
Where the DNA of A Man Escaped travels
Films it shaped

I knew I wanted to do a prison picture, and I think that, for example, 'A Man Escaped' is one of the greatest films ever made. Bresson is a huge influence, but I'm not attempting to be Bresson in any way.

He mentions [...] Robert Bresson's A Man Escaped as particular influences on the film's structure and mood.

We watched a ton [of prison break movies]. We watched everything from The Great Escape to Cool Hand Luke, all the obvious ones. Even some not so obvious ones like a French film called A Man Escaped by Robert Bresson.
-
I went back to a radical, classical style, which I found in Robert Bresson's films, like A Man Escaped, and also Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet's films, where the viewer is very much connected to one character and you follow that character, and the rest is unknown or out of focus, or out of frame. This style allows the viewer to be with the character in an immediate way.

Gravity Atlas note
Alfonso Cuarón cited Robert Bresson's A Man Escaped as the primary structural influence for Gravity, the methodical, almost silent focus on survival as process rather than drama. Bresson showed him how to make watching someone work be more compelling than action. The isolation and the visual tone of space came from Tarkovsky's Solaris. Cuarón documented this in multiple interviews around 2013-2014. Both films are on Criterion Channel.

Dunkirk Atlas note
In conceptualizing the relentless, ticking-clock tension of Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan deliberately abandoned the traditional, dialogue-heavy war film structure in favor of pure, visceral mechanics. Nolan explicitly mandated that his entire crew study Robert Bresson's A Man Escaped and Pickpocket, fascinated by Bresson's ability to generate excruciating suspense through meticulous, wordless focus on physical processes and geographic logic. He also widely cited Henri-Georges Clouzot's masterpiece of anxiety, The Wages of Fear, as the ultimate cinematic textbook for sustaining a singular note of breathless tension over an entire feature runtime. By anchoring the survival of an army in these precise, minimalist traditions, Nolan forged an experiential nightmare of sound and motion.
